DECISION TO GET HEALTHY.>>I’M CARLOS. 42-YEAR-OLD FROM MICHIGAN. AT 6’1″, I’VE ALWAYS BEEN A BIGGER PERSON. MY WEIGHT STARTED BALLOONING IN MY LATE 20s WHEN I MOVED AWAY FROM MY PARENTS. THERE WAS NO ONE TO HOLD MY ACCOUNTABLE, AND I TURNED TO FOOD AND ALCOHOL TO MAKE ME FEEL BETTER. NO MATTER WHAT MOOD I WAS IN. I COULD STILL FUNCTION AND PLAY SPORTS, SO I DIDN’T THINK MY WEIGHT WAS A PROBLEM. I CONTINUED EATING FRIED FOODS, FAST FOODS, BREADS, SODA, AND ALCOHOL. ON MY 38th BIRTHDAY, I WEIGHED 651 POUNDS AND DEVELOPED A BLOOD INFECTION THAT CAUSED SEVERE SWELLING AND ULCERS IN MY LEGS. THE SYMPTOMS GOT WORSE FOR MY WEIGHT. I MET WITH A SURGEON TO DISCUSS A GAS SURGERY. HE TOLD ME IF I DIDN’T CHANGE MY LIFESTYLE, I WOULDN’T MAKE IT TO MY 40s. MY BROTHER AND SISTER WERE EXPECTING A DAUGHTER, AND I WANTED TO BE AROUND FOR MY NIECE. I NEEDED TO DROP 100 POUNDS IN SIX MONTHS FOR MY SURGERY. I WAS SET UP WITH A DIETITIAN, WHO TOLD ME IF I DIDN’T LOSE THE WEIGHT, HE’D CANCEL THE SURGERY. I TOOK HIS WORDS TO HEART AND IMMEDIATELY REPLACED BAD FOODS AND ALCOHOL WITH VEGETABLES, FRUITS, AND LEAN PROTEINS. I ALSO WENT ON 3 MILE WALKS AROUND MY NEIGHBORHOOD EVERY DAY. THE FIRST THREE MONTHS WERE REALLY TOUGH. I WAS CONSTANTLY FIGHTI ING URG AND CRIED MYSELF TO SLEEP MANY MONTHS. DECEMBER 2016, MORNING OF MY SURGERY, I WAS 555 POUNDS. I WAS DISAPPOINTED ABOUT THE LAST FIVE POUNDS, BUT NONE THE LESS, WENT INTO MY SURGERY. THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, I DROPPED 60 POUNDS BUT PLATEAUED AROUND 350 POUNDS. THEN I DISCOVERED RUNNING. I RAN MY FIRST 5K IN HONOR OF A FRIEND WHO RECENTLY PASSED AWAY. I FELT SO MUCH LOVE AND SUPPORT FROM THE PEOPLE CHEERING ME ON, AND THE RUNNERS, AND I KEPT AT IT. I’VE LOST MORE THAN 450 POUNDS. NOW, I’M TRAINING FOR HEAVIEST LOST 450 POUNDS, MORE THAN HALF HIS BODY WEIGHT.>>THIS IS CARLOS BEFORE.>>LET’S MEET HIM AND SEE HIS TRANSFORMATION. CARLOS, COME ON OUT.>>WOW.>>WHOA.>>OH, MY GOODNESS.>>AMAZING.>>LOOK AT YOU.>>HELLO. IT’S SO NICE TO SEE YOU.>>CONGRATULATIONS.>>THANK YOU.>>CONGRATULATIONS.>>WOW.>>WE’RE SET BCELEBRATING YOU, FRIEND.>>HOW DO YOU FEEL?>>WONDERFUL. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.>>YOU KNOW, WE WERE LISTENING TO THE STORY BEFORE WE WENT TO COMMERCIAL BREAK. YOU WEIGHED 651 POUNDS AT YOUR HEAVIEST.>>YES.>>HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW?>>I FEEL LIKE A NEW PERSON REALLY. I HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH A SECOND CHANCE, ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY.>>IS THAT THE WAY IT FEELS, YOU’VE BEEN BLESSED WITH A SECOND CHANCE?>>YES. I REALIZE NOT EVERYBODY HAS THE CHANCE, HAS THAT SECOND OPPORTUNITY TO DO IT. REALLY WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO ME. A CHANCE TO DO THINGS THE RIGHT WAY THIS TIME.>>SOMEBODY — I MEAN, I HAD A GASTRIC BYPASS. YOU HAVE TO — IT IS A JOURNEY, TO COME TO THAT POINT, TO MAKE THAT RADICAL DECISION.>>YEAH.>>WHAT WAS IT FOR YOU, WHAT WAS THE TURNING POINT THAT SAID, THIS IS WHAT I HAVE TO DO?>>THE TURNING POINT WAS JUST THE HEALTH ISSUES THAT KEPT COMING, THAT I WAS HAVING. I KNEW THAT I WASN’T GETTING ANY BETTER. YOU KNOW, MY LEGS WERE MY BIGGEST POINT. IT CAME TO THE POINT WHERE, YOU KNOW, MY SISTER AND BROTHER-IN-LAW WERE EXPECTING. LIFE STARTED TO, YOU KNOW, KICK IN, AND SAY I NEEDED TO BE AROUND FOR A LONG TIME BECAUSE I WAS GOING TO BE AN UNCLE. YOU KNOW, THOSE LITTLE THINGS LIKE THAT MAKE YOU REALIZE THAT DOING THINGS THE WRONG WAY IS ALMOST A LITTLE BIT SELFISH. THERE’S PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT YOU. PEOPLE NEED YOU AROUND.>>YOU GET TO THAT POINT. I’D IMAGINE ONCE YOU SIGN UP TO DO THE SURGERY, IT’S SCARY. WERE YOU NERVOUS?>>VERY SCARY. ABSOLUTELY. IT’S COMPLETE LIFE-CHANGING PROCEDURE. TO TRY TO RECONDITION YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS, YOUR EATING PROCESS, EVERYTHING TO THIS NEW WAY. IT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE BEEN USED TO YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. IT IS A HUGE CHANGE.>>YOU DIDN’T JUST HAVE THE SURGERY, LIKE MR. ROKER HERE, YOU CHANGED YOUR DIET DRAMATICALLY AFTER THAT SURGERY, I WOULD ASSUME. WE HAVE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITES HERE.>>ABSOLUTELY. DEFINITELY WENT FROM A DIET OF, YOU KNOW, PRETTY MUCH FAST FOOD AND HIGH CARB INTAKE BEFORE THAT TO A LOT OF HEALTHIER EATING, A LOT OF CHICKEN. I EAT CHICKEN QUITE OFTEN. GRANOLA BARS HERE IN GENERAL. I LIKE TO KNOW WHAT I’M EATING NOW. STAY AWAY FROM THE PROCESSED FOODS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. PRIOR TO THE SURGERY, YOU KNOW, I CUT OUT EVERYTHING THAT WAS A VICE AND GO-TO FOR ME BEFORE. LIKE THE FRIED FOODS, FAST FOODS, BREADS, ALCOHOL, SODA. I CUT IT OUT COMPLETELY FROM MY DIET. THAT’S WHAT HELPED ME LOSE THE 100 POUNDS PRIOR TO MY SURGERY.>>DO YOU MISS IT AT ALL, OR IS THIS A NEW LIFESTYLE MANY.>>I DID AT FIRST. THEY WERE GO-TOS FOR ME. THEY WERE MY CONSTANTS. AS THE TIME HAS PASSED, I BEGIN TO REALIZE THAT I DON’T REALLY NEED THEM. I CAN STILL DO WITHOUT THEM.>>NOW — SO YOU START LOSING THE WEIGHT, THEN YOU FIND THIS PASSION FOR RUNNING.>>YES.>>WAS THAT KIND OF YOUR OUTLET, YOUR — I MEAN, A LOT OF US WHO HAVE THAT OBSESSION, BECAUSE WE PUT IT INTO FOOD, WE HAVE TO FIND SOMETHING TO CHANNEL IT INTO.>>YEAH.>>WAS IT RUNNING FOR YOU?>>WELL, THE RUNNING KIND OF HAPPENED JUST BY CHANCE. I HAD A FRIEND WHO HAD PASSED AWAY. HIS WIFE PUT A TEAM TOGETHER TO DO A RUN/WALK, A 5K TO HONOR HIM. IT WAS A GREAT IDEA, COINCIDING WITH THE SURGERY. I’VE NEVER DONE ONE BEFORE, BUT LET’S GIVE IT A SHOT. I DID IT AND ENDED UP WALKING THE THREE MILES AND FINISHING ABOUT AN HOUR AND A HALF.>>YOU FINISHED.>>I FINISHED. SHE WAS WAITING FOR ME AT THE FINISH LINE. IT WAS JUST THE ATMOSPHERE, THE PRE-RACE AND THE POST RACE, EVERYBODY WAS SO SUPPORTIVE THAT IT REALLY MADE ME WANT TO CONTINUE TO DO THEM. I WENT FROM WALKING THEM TO WALKING/RUNNING THEM, AND NOW ABOUT 37 RACES LATER, I’VE DONE –>>37 RACES LATER?>>MEDALS TO PROVE IT.>>I’VE DONE THREE HALF MARATHONS, AND I’M TRAINING FOR MY FIRST FULL MARATHON THIS COMING OCTOBER.>>A LOT OF PEOPLE THROW EVERYTHING AWAY. THEY DON’T WANT TO LOOK AT OLD PANTS OR ANY OLD CLOTHES. YOU’VE KEPT A PAIR OF JEANS, SITTING NEXT TO YOU.>>I HELD ON TO ONE THING.>>YOU WANTED TO KEEP IT?>>EVERYTHING ELSE WAS THROWN AWAY, LITERALLY BURNED, JUST BECAUSE I WANTED TO BE DONE WITH IT.>>HECK OF A FIRE. I KNOW THE FEELING.>>WE COULD HAVE HAD A REALLY GOOD TIME.>>CAN YOU STAND UP AND HOLD THOSE NEXT TO YOU?>>ABSOLUTELY.>>YOU KEPT THESE ONE PAIR.>>WHAT SIZE?>>78 WAIST.>>OH, GEEZ.>>YOU COULD FIT INTO ONE LEG.>>I DO GET INTO ONE LEG.>>AND STILL HAVE ROOM.>>FANTASTIC.>>YOU HAVE TO BE PROUD OF YOURSELF.>>IT’S HUMBLING.>>CONGRATULATIONS.>>VERY HUMBLING.>>THANK YOU SO MUCH.>>THIS IS A JOURNEY. GRACHG CONGRATULATIONS ON IT.
