Oslo – North Cape,
the ultimate motorcycle roadtrip 3500 km of wonderful roads through Norway
to reach the end of Europe 3500 km to reach those bloody
coordinates : 71° 10′ N materialized by huge cliffs diving into
the arctic ocean -35°c in winter, +20°c in summer,
122 days of snow Absolutely no sunlight during winter,
and a midnight-sun during summer Mineral landscapes made of
mountains and glaciers of unfathomable fjords
and wild reindeers It’s easy to understand why the
North Cape can be the adventure of a lifetime About that… what is “motorcycle adventure” ? Good question… It’s having a departure point
and a destination, but no plan in between The true adventure is to go on a roadtrip
without knowing where you’ll sleep Everyday is an adventure Tell me ! What was your biggest adventure ? Oh ok As you can see, the answer
is not that simple For us, the adventure began on a monday
morning in the region of Oslo Honda invited 40 pilots to share
that incredible journey to the North Cape on an Africa Twin I usually go solo, and sharing the ride
with all those people made me feel baffled and intimidated Travelling with people is never easy.
My ass is super resistant, I never pee and my stomach shuts down Whereas there is always someone who wants to smoke,
put the rain suit on and then go to pee 5 minutes later… But I was being foolish… I had forgotten
I was about to discover, meet and learn Our first day was cloudy, but it was the occasion
for the Indonesians to see snow for the first time ever On my side, I discovered the amazing
Troll Road… which I didn’t see because of the fog But without this shitty weather we would
have missed those outlandish landscapes I bet you’re not so thrilled about North Cape now… Well… It’s snowing… Even during
summer, the North Cape is not a piece of cake The sun will come out in a few minutes now…
No need to worry… The North Cape is not for pussies But don’t leave yet ! I’ve kept the best for later… As we took ferries and crossed bridges,
Norway came to us… majestically Steep cliffs diving into unfathomable fjords And between all that, they had to build
stunning winding-roads Yesterday we did the awesome
Atlantic Road, and its bridge spanning the sea From a certain point of view, you can imagine
the bridge ending in the middle and swallowing vehicules And at its foot lies a gigantic maelstrom. I took the bridge a couple times, in both ways.
A seagull even escorted me when I was supposed to fall. Magical. And there are tunnels, diving so deep
underground that you’ll feel pressure on your eardrums And if tunnels and bridges are not enough
to cross the 83,000 km of coast… – Uuuuuh….
– Oh yes, that much ! … the hundreds of fjorbs, the 50,000 islands…
You can hop on a ferry In Norway, one takes a ferry as
one takes a bus The Norwegian gives a ticket to the inspector,
whereas it costs you 10€ for 4 nautical miles Everything’s quite expensive here… France may be the best country in the world to ride
a motorcycle. Thanks to its landscapes and roads But honestly, Norway is probably the second on my list The Norwegian small roads are fantastic.
It really makes you want to flat out with the Africa Twin So along the fjords, sometimes you let yourself go…
a lot faster than the legal limit of 90km/h But be careful. During the high season, the cops are watching.
500€ for the first 10km/h above the limit. Beyond, I don’t know. It’s the occasion the see that the Africa Twin
is really efficient Straighforward, easy, evident, always present I love the driving position, the wide handlebar
and the narrowness of the tank Stand up and the footpegs
and you can picture youself doing the Dakar ! The engine is always full, the shocks are very efficient
the Dual Clutch Tranmission is obviously the future Honestly, I don’t know what could prevent anyone
from switching gears with buttons on the handlebar You know, I’ve always loved looking forward On the sixth day, we reached a climax of the journey The Lofoten Islands which are, to me,
one of the most beautiful places on earth You better have a good healthcare, because
you might break your retina and dislocate your optic nerve With its small 20°c, Norway is far behind the Bahamas
but the clarity of water reminds me of bus ads The kind of ad you see on your daily commute
and that reminds you holidays are over… Take some strong-red tiny fisherman’s cabins,
with their roof looking more like meadows Huge fish-dryers, moutains standing proudly,
and you are ready to apply for Norwegian citizenship Just like when two Norwegian girls played a gig
for us, under the midnight sun And you know what ? Thanks to this
absolute simplicity we spent our best evening together We got closer, we exchanged, we got to know each other better I tell you friend, when traveling you must run away from hotels
and luxury, and you’ll be rich of exchanges and encounters A poetry that our friend Jean-Paul didn’t hesitate
to extend in the morning… They’re crazy… On my side, I took the opportunity to review
the situation with the other drivers – Satisfaction
– Can you sing it for me ? – I was a bit worried to be honest
– why ? – They told me it was going to be very hard. I didn’t know
if I would be good enough – Let me reassure you : you’re not. Everyday you have to… hm…pff… uh…. I went to the South Cape, to Ushaia,
and my dream was to do the North Cape. – And is it as you expected ?
– Yes, I have that satisfaction ~~ SatiSfaction ! ~~ – It’s gorgeous, there are flowers all along the road
– So “don’t come here” then ? – No, don’t come. Otherwise there will be
too many tourists. Remain at home. Day after day after day after day after day…
it makes quite alot of kilometres ! Danke shoen Gunter My only regret during the journey
was the lack of offroad sections Too bad… because even if we had road tyres,
we went just a bit off roads and the Africa Twin is really good at it Thanks to its big steady and guiding
21 inches front wheel, Thanks to its well-balanced frame,
its thin tank and seat, its Gravel Mode and its Traction Control, that can be
set at the minimum to juggle between grip and drift The ABS allows you to spare the life
of animals that may cross you path… Theoretically speaking – THAT is adventure, isn’t it ?
– Oh yes. This wood fire is great. Did you see the reindeers on the road ? – I did, yes
– Marvellous animals… Speaking of which… Hmmmm delicious ! – What do you think Lolo ?
– I don’t eat reindeer anymore… … You see, adventure can be as simple as a meal … or going on a tricky offroad session
with your pillion On the seventh day, the landscapes blew our minds But the fatigue caused by our daily 500 km
initiated a snoring contest Bodies collapse. Motorcycles too.
And I won’t talk about mental health…
Did you seen the camels ? I’ve never
seen camels with horns ! Jean-Paul… We’ve spent 4 days together now.
It’s becoming difficult… Fortunately, the North Cape is only 250km away 250km that seem to tell you a story
and build suspense We leave fjords to dive into a super wild countryside With its mighty torrents,
fed by a sudden snowmelt Wild reindeers graze everywhere I’ve never been to Alaska,
but I bet it looks just like that After a few last zigzags and an abrupt slope Grass disappears and leave its place to long snow banks
and some still-frozen lakes Far away, you can sense the cliffs, the abyss,
the true end : The North Cape Among the participants of the “Adventure Roads”
on Africa Twin, the emotion was palpable – How does Lolo Cochet feel ?
– I already did the North Cape during winter… It’s way more windy, but honnestly
it’s even more beautiful during summer !
