Where to get Supplies | How to Make Kombucha | Beginners Series

hey everyone welcome to my kombucha
channel my name is Liz and today’s video kicks off the first video in my seven
part series for beginners of how to make kombucha so this video is about where to
get your supplies in the seven part series I’m gonna break down each step
along the way for making kombucha to help to hopefully help simplify that for
you so first I’m going to go over the supplies you’ll need and then I’ll go
over the ingredients and I’m also going to give you some ideas of where you can
purchase the items all these things you can get at Amazon so I’m going to leave
links down below in the description box for you please note that these are
affiliate links meaning if you make a purchase I’ll get a small small
percentage of that and thank you very much by the way I appreciate your
support but if you’re not an amazon shopper no worries I’ve got you covered
so the first item is a large glass jar you can see in the corner here I have
these dispenser jars or you can use something more simple like this glass
jar now this is a half-gallon mason jar and it’s marked with the different
measurements on the side if you want something simple you don’t want to spend
a lot of money go ahead and check out your local thrift stores or goodwill
usually you can find old glass jars there you could also reuse the the big
glass pickle jars I like to use these half-gallon mason jars because they’re
marked on the side so I already I know the measurements when I’m doing my tea I
got these I think it was six for around $13 a local hardware store for these
dispenser glass jars I got these at Stein Mart you can find these anywhere
if they have them at t.j.maxx Target Walmart pretty much pretty much anywhere
or you could also look on a online kombucha supply store next is the cover
what to cover the jars with so when I’m using these half-gallon mason jars I
usually just use a napkin with the rubber band or I’ll use one of the Bands
that’s the jars came with and then twist that on if you’re using say a pickle jar
you could use anything that’s breathable that’s that’s what
keep in mind so I have these cloth napkins that I purchased at the
Christmas tree shop you could also use a kitchen towel or you could just use an
old t-shirt you just want to make sure it’s breathable and it’s the holes are
small enough so that fruit flies don’t get in
so because of fruit flies I would not recommend using cheesecloth reason is so
you fold the cheesecloth over but those little buggers can still get through so
just be careful with that cloth napkins are pretty common as well you can
probably find them at dollar store Target Walmart like I said I got these
at Christmas tree shop so you’re also going to need some good ferment to
bottles some things to keep in mind or you’ll need bottles that have a cap and
you want to look for bottles that are made for carbonation so coming to the
two-step process the first step is put in the kombucha nice big jars and that’s
where it well it turns from tea to kombucha and then you’re gonna pour it into
these smaller jars and cap it off to hold the carbonation and most of my
bottles that I use are old kombucha bottles so this is a GTS bottle
GT’s is pretty popular this is an Aldi bottle health ade kombucha I’m not sure
where I got this bottle but it’s fun to drink out of and I even have some grolsh
bottles a friend sent me a couple years ago so if you’re not a beer drinker you
don’t know anyone that drinks but you want some Grolsch bottles check your
local recycling company a lot of times they have them for pretty cheap okay
moving on you’re gonna want to get a good strainer and the reason is these
strainers these mesh strainer will strain out the bits of yeast that build
up in the kombucha most people don’t like to drink that you can get these
pretty much anywhere a dollar store Target Walmart stores like that and a
measuring cup you don’t have to use glass this one right here it’s plastic
and it suits me just fine because the kombucha is not sitting in there for a
long time just not even a minute you also need a spoon to stir your
kombucha so you could use plastic because you’re just stirring it real
quick some people say not to use plastic at all I don’t have a problem with it
because like I said your spoons only in the kombucha for a few seconds you can
also get a wooden spoon however you want to make sure that the spoon is only used
for ferments because if you’re using that spoon to cook with it’s possible
that something could get into your kombucha which could cause mold or you
can use stainless steel ingredients that you’ll need to make kombucha you’ll need
a Scoby and starter – here I have a Scoby hotel that has a bunch of
scobie’s in it you only need one and some starter tea
you can most people get those from a friend you can buy them at online
kombucha stores Amazon has them or if you don’t feel like spending money to
get one you can make one and I’ll link a video up here or over here on how to
grow your own Scooby you also need table sugar and you can get that anywhere
sugars sold next ingredient is tea it’s usually preferred that you use organic
but the decisions up to you all my teas are not organic most of them are I use
tea bags and I use loose tea and you can get them pretty much anywhere online
retailers grocery stores you get the point all right guys so that concludes
the first video in two days I will show you how to steep your tea see you in the
next one
